A week in Sorrento on the beautiful Neapolitan coastline with included excursions by train, mini-bus and on foot with a choice of hotels
Sorrento - 7 nights
The Romans were great travellers but their favourite places lay naturally close to home. They chose Sorrento as a bathing resort, influenced by its idyllic location on the Bay of Naples, overlooking the island of Capri, itself the main residence of Emperor Tiberius. Vesuvio’s eruption in 79AD preserved both Pompeii and Herculaneum in contrasting ways, offering a unique insight into the Roman way of life. The Amalfi Drive along the ‘Divine Coast’, one of the most spectacular drives in the world is by special mini-buses which access the centres of elegant Amalfi, Positano and Ravello and do not have to return ‘the long way round’ for larger buses.
Stay in bustling Sorrento with its elegant shops, characterful bars and excellent restaurants. Alternatively choose a historic villa at a quiet location in the Sant’Agnello district of Sorrento, not a conventional hotel but a well-priced ‘guest house’, formerly owned by the author, Francis Marion Crawford and changed by his grandson to a religious guest house of charm with fine views.
