Venice & the Ducal Cities

Cruise from Venice on the Venetian lagoon to Mantua along the Canal Bianco on board the MS Michelangelo including excursions to Vicenza, Verona, Mantua, Cremona and Parma

Of course the famed Doges (dukes) ruled a great Empire from Venice, but nearby cities, some founded by the Romans before the creation of Venice, had their own dukes whose lands and riches created a wonderful artistic and architectural history.

Canal Bianco is a seaworthy canal linking Mantua in Lombardy to the Adriatic Sea through the Veneto region, location of the ducal cites of Vicenza and Verona.

Vicenza reveals countless villas designed in the 16th century for the wealthy – some beautifully restored, some faded glories.

Verona, once ruled by the Scaliger dukes, also reveals its Roman heritage at the Arena, the third largest Roman amphitheatre in existence, whilst a certain balcony evokes the tragic story of Romeo and Juliet.

Mantua is one of the most artistically rich cities in northern Italy, a former ducal capital of the House of Gonzaga.

The ducal town of Parma in Emilia Romagna reveals Romanesque, Renaissance and medieval architecture, and a treasure trove of paintings, not forgetting world-famous Parma ham and parmesan cheese!
