The equatorial island of Borneo offers a spectacular opportunity to encounter flora, fauna, topography and tribes people of astonishing diversity in Sarawak and neighbouring Sabah – the two states of Malaysian Borneo.
Sarawak, the one-time outpost of the White Rajahs – the erstwhile rulers – is the gateway to a huge hinterland of dense tropical rainforest and mountain ranges, historical Kuching, the capital, is dotted with temples, museums and regal colonial architecture. Known for its Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, to observe these unique animals in the surrounding forest reserve, having been rescued from captivity. Orangutans only native to the island of Borneo and sharing 97% of their DNA with humans, have been sadly losing their habitat owing to deforestation for palm tree oil production.
Sabah is home to the world’s oldest jungles, sandy beaches, Kota Kinabalu and the fascinating Kinabatangan River area which has a concentration of 10 primate species, with some of the most satisfying to spot being the wild orangutan and Proboscis monkey.
