Wild Masai Mara

Immerse yourself in the wild at this classic African safari experience at the luxurious and iconic Governors’ Camp, the original riverside location best for both scenery and safari

The Governors’ Camp Collection of seven award winning safari camps and lodges lie at the heart of some of the best wildlife viewing areas. Therefore it comes as no surprise that landmark TV series such as BBC Earth’s ‘Dynasties’ and Animal Planet’s ‘Big Cat Tales’ were filmed right at Governors’ Camp doorstep.

For nearly 50 years Governors’ has been pioneering safaris, setting the standard for the classic African safari experience. Governors’ Camp, the first permanent tented camp in the Masai Mara occupies the best year round wildlife viewing area in the National Park. The location was considered so good that it was reserved for the colonial Governors of Kenya, hence the name Governors’ Camp. It nestles in the forest along the winding banks of the Mara River, it’s waters teeming with bird-life, hippo and crocodile.

Kenya reveals a massive concentration of large mammals, home to thousands of animals, best viewed on Masai Mara game drives. Along with the incredible array of game animals is a virtually unrivalled variety of birdlife.

The savannah grasslands of East Africa offer the world’s most famous wildlife spectacle, as part of the greater Serengeti ecosystem when around 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle arrive at the Mara between July and September. This great migration is awaited eagerly by the many predators lying in wait.

Discover the ancestral land of the Masai tribes, the habitats of abundant wildlife, the home of endangered black rhinos, ‘the Mara’ as a Big Five reserve and a Big Cat haunt. Africa is the last great wilderness of our generation and Kenya is the perfect place to answer Africa’s call of the wild.

Day 1 Fly direct from Heathrow to Nairobi. Overnight at the Eka Hotel.

Day 2 Transfer to your flight to the Masai Mara Game Reserve for four nights at Governors’ Camp. Afternoon game drive. Evening introductory photography talk with Will Fortescue, Governors’ Camp in house photographer, which allows you both to meet and have a conversation about your previous photography experience and expectations for your time together. Will has a first class degree in Marine and Natural History Photography as well as over a year’s experience of photography in the Mara with Governors’. Will is accompanying this tour to make sure you go home with the perfect safari photograph! In order to maximise the time you spend out on safari Will will meet you in camp the evening before your days together, which is a great chance to go over any technical questions you may have about your equipment, as well as go through an image review and discuss a few composition techniques. He will also talk about using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to make small changes and perfect your images.  (B, L, D)

Day 3 Arise early each morning to make the most of your spectacular location. Each day will offer you the option of three game drives within the Mara, immersing yourself in this rich wildlife destination. Now that you’re out ‘in the bush’, Will will be working with your guide to ensure that your vehicle is in the best position each time you want to take a photograph; a few meters to the left or to the right can make a huge difference to your photos. Once in position there is ample time to explore a wide range of camera techniques and image style; close up portraits, wide angle scenic shots, freeze frame and slow shutter speed (panning) images, back and front lighting, silhouettes, and many more. The aim is that by the end of your safari adjusting your camera settings will come as second nature. However throughout your safari Will is able to call out settings that he’s using so as to best take advantage of the light and to ensure you should never miss a shot. In the afternoons, after lunch, you can choose to relax during siesta or sort through your photographs and come to grips with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. (B, L, D)
