From the Colombian Caribbean port of Cartagena via Bogotá to explore the old Inca Empire in Peru, visiting Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and the capital, Cuzco, amidst the iconic Andes mountains

Colombia is an emerging destination, enjoying stability after decades of conflict. Explore captivating Cartagena de Indias, the evocative port on the Caribbean coast, with its UNESCO-listed walled city. Founded at the time of the Spanish Empire, Cartagena was subsequently attacked by waves of pirates and national fleets; the forts and cannons erected to protect it are still in place.

Bogotá, Colombia’s cosmopolitan capital founded in 1538 by the Spanish explorer Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, nestles high in the Andes in a region once home to many pre-Hispanic cultures including the Incas.

Peru is the heartland of the Incas and littered with sites that showcase this powerful empire’s powers as master builders, most notably Machu Picchu but also in the Sacred Valley. Visiting this citadel hidden in the Andes mountains is inspiration enough for a first time visit, but the Incas were just one in a long line of people with a surviving legacy to explore.

Cuzco was the capital of the former Inca Empire and a Spanish colonial architectural masterpiece.
