Day 5 – La Palma
Day 6 – El Hierro
Day 7 – Tenerife
Day 8 – Return flight
Cruise six of the eight Canary islands historically considered as a bridge between the four continents of Africa, North/South America and Europe. Sugarcane and wine proved popular exports and during the Spanish Empire, the Canaries archipelago was the main stopover for Spanish galleons on their way to the Americas. Great wealth returned from the New World which encouraged invasions from the Ottomans, Dutch and British all leaving their mark on these beautiful islands.
Commence in Lanzarote, famous for its spectacular volcanic landscapes, demonstrated at the Timanfaya National Park with moon-like terrain where even NASA used the area as a training base. Black volcanic sand beaches are in abundance, along with unique art and architecture, with much influence stemming from César Manrique.
Gran Canaria is a melting pot of cultures with the capital - Las Palmas being the first stop for Christopher Columbus on his return from the Americas, where the winding, narrow, cobbled streets of 15th century Vegueta old town can be enjoyed. A third of the island is UNESCO Biosphere reserve.
The smaller islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro remain quiet, unspoilt and charming in their individual ways, with magical landscapes, palm-filled valleys, ancient forests and crystal clear waters. Tenerife, the largest and most populous island of the Canaries is dominated by Mount Teide dormant volcano which is Spain’s tallest peak and the third highest volcano in the world.
