Andalucía was part of the Roman Empire and birthplace of Emperor Hadrian but the full flavour of the region developed with the invasion of the Moors in 711. Arab influence is most evident in the spectacular architecture of the Mezquita of Córdoba and Alcázar in Seville but also survives in the language, Guadalquivir being Arabic for ‘Great River’.
Seville is a most enchanting city, passionate in outlook, balmy in atmosphere, this is the capital of Andalucía and the home of Flamenco. White washed houses, flower filled patios and labyrinthine streets are filled with the rich fragrance of orange blossom. The charming city is a melting pot of Muslim, Catholic and Jewish cultures with a medieval quarter, Moorish Alcázar and Plaza de España to explore. Although 70 miles from the sea, Seville has been a port for most of its history thanks to the navigable Guadalquivir.
Set dramatically on a rocky promontory surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Cádiz claims to be Europe’s oldest city. From here the Spanish and French fleet set sail in 1805 for their fateful encounter with Nelson at Trafalgar.
