Gone are the days of the Royal Mail ship transferring people and goods to this remote island, now it is possible to visit with ease by air. Previously the operation of the Royal Mail service to St. Helena provided the only opportunity to reach this isolated and remote tropical island. Jules Verne possess over 10 years’ experience of touring programmes to St. Helena since a British government commission approached to increase tourism to the island.
Located 1,400 miles from the nearest landfall, St. Helena offers deep verdant valleys, barren desert, volcanic scree, plenty of birdlife and a fascinating history, connected with early trade with the Far East. It has welcomed famous people such as Charles Darwin, the Duke of Wellington and Captain Cook and was also a place of exile, most notably for Napoleon, who died there, the Zulu chief Dinizulu and 6,000 Boer prisoners.
Given the advent of a newly opened quality hotel on the island, this is the perfect opportunity to experience historic charm and modern comfort. This unique journey is combined with a stay in Pretoria, allowing for a glimpse of old city landmarks with new significance, the Union Buildings now best known for Nelson Mandela’s inauguration.
