Corsican is recognised as a regional language by the French government and Corsica enjoys greater autonomy than other French regions. Best known around the world for its warm climate, dramatic mountain peaks and stunning coastlines, Corsica is indeed a fascinating destination.
After rule by the Republic of Genoa, Corsica became an Italian-speaking independent republic from 1755, until ceded by Genoa to Louis XV in 1769, the year Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Ajaccio – his ancestral home (Maison Bonaparte) is today a museum. The island has since been part of France, except during 1794–96 when under English domination (Anglo-Corsican Kingdom), and during the German and Italian occupation of 1940–43. Due to historical ties with the Italian peninsula, Corsica retains Italian cultural elements.
To prevent seaborne raids, mainly from North Africa, a massive defence system was constructed that included citadels and coastal watchtowers, many of which are still visible along the coastline.
