Grand Tour of Austria

Discover Austria’s palaces, museums and musical heritage, travelling through magnificent scenery from Imperial Vienna and Mozart’s Salzburg to the wonderful scenery of the Tirol

Once the centre of the Habsburg and Holy Roman Empires, Austria is now relatively small but with great cultural diversity and heritage. Vienna’s position at the eastern end of Austria and the Alps contrasts with the dramatic mountains of Salzburg and Tirol to the west. A visit to Austria should include both the alpine scenery and the cultural highlights.

Vienna, the imperial capital is the best starting point of a tour with magnificent palaces, unrivalled museums, classic coffee houses and a great music tradition.

The Habsburg Emperor Maximilian preferred to reside in Innsbruck, founding the Hofburg Palace and church. Later, however, the Tiroleans, proud and independent, felt let down by the Viennese after they defeated Napoleon’s troops and never forgave the Habsburgs for the peace treaty. Even today many Tiroleans when asked if they have visited Vienna reply “once, with the school!”

Salzburg, home of Mozart and the ‘Sound of Music’, was an independent archbishopric that reveals the medieval and the baroque, and many fine palaces and churches!
