Secret Balkans

Explore the hidden gems of Montenegro by boat and train, with visits to Albania and Serbia

This original arrangement combines the lesser-known Balkan countries of Serbia and Montenegro. The itinerary focuses on the magnificent scenery explored by train and boat, and visits to medieval towns and sleepy villages. Belgrade, Serbia’s capital, also known as the ‘White City’, is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkans. It is home to the largest Orthodox church in the world, the Church of Saint Sava.

The railway from Belgrade to Bar on the Adriatic Sea is 454km long and is one of the most scenic mountain lines in Europe with many bridges and tunnels.

Montenegro is often considered a new country, however its history goes back millennia and is closely intertwined with its Balkan neighbours. For such a small state its architecture is a mixture of many influences, from Roman and Venetian to Ottoman and modern times. The UNESCO site of Bay of Kotor is the most southerly fjord in Europe and unique in the Mediterranean.
