This highlights tour has been carefully designed to distil the authentic Jules Verne experience into a concise arrangement, shorter and more affordable.
An ethnic and cultural melting pot, Uzbekistan has ancient roots and has seen the wax and wane of countless empires. Situated on the historic Silk Road, the exchange of goods and ideas – religious, intellectual and artistic – left a remarkable historical and architectural legacy. The capital, Tashkent reflects a combination of Soviet, Uzbek and Silk Road influences.
Samarkand, Tamerlane’s capital, was one of the great medieval trading centres and whose gift, and that of his grandson Ulug Beg, is to be found in the magnificent buildings. The Registan, the main square, is the centrepiece surrounded by buildings whose pillars, arches and domes explore perfection in colour and shape.
Bukhara’s great days began in the 9th century as the seat of the Samanid dynasty, but even when they were deposed and Samarkand prospered, Bukhara remained an important trading centre on the Silk Road. The old town is a treasure trove of old and beautiful buildings dotted around a warren of jumbled streets with the Ark, a citadel with 18-metre walls, dominating the main square.

Notes
Hotels in Uzbekistan are simple and unpretentious but well-located with a restaurant, bar and air-conditioned rooms with private facilities and satellite TV. From time to time, there may be water and electricity shortages and, on occasion, alternative hotels may be used. WiFi (free) is available at all hotels on the tour, although can be intermittent depending on local conditions. Food is based on fresh local produce and is nutritious but can be repetitive. Travel between the cities by road, whilst being a classic way to experience the country, involves some long journeys with only limited opportunities for comfort breaks. The order of sightseeing tours may vary in accordance with local conditions.
