Explore the emerging northern region of Sri Lanka which has retained its unique style and culture after being off limits during decades of civil war, ending in 2009. Since then, the region has developed significantly and slowly detached itself from a period of isolation to transition into one of Sri Lanka’s best kept secrets.
Wilpattu National Park, named after the hundreds of ponds scattered over the vast area, is known for leopard sightings and home to thirty species of mammal, including the sloth bear, water buffalo and spotted deer. The immense bird population of the park includes the painted stork, open bill and little cormorant.
The regional capital of Jaffna offers a wide cross-section of influences, including Muslim, Portuguese, Dutch, British and Sinhalese, with colourful temples set next to huge churches, and streets dotted with ancient Dutch and British residences.
Trincomalee, preferred for its beaches, has a sense of charm and character with faded colonial buildings and a picturesque seafront.
