Bharatpur is renowned for the UNESCO’s World Heritage Site: Keoladeo Ghana National Park, a wetland and significant bird sanctuary ideal for bird watching. This diverse habitat is home to 366 bird species, 379 floral species, 50 species of fish, 13 species of snakes and 7 species of turtles. Every year this park is visited by water birds including the exotic migratory birds from Afghanistan, Central Asia and Tibet and the rare Siberian cranes.
Ranthambore is the quintessential Rajasthan wildlife park. Dominated by a 1,000 year-old fort, the landscape is dotted with cupolas, temples and memorial stones bearing witness to a fascinating history. The mighty Mughal Emperor Akbar fought a battle here but today the tiger rules the thick forest gorges. To hunt the tiger was against tribal beliefs but as hunting became big business, to bag a tiger was the great challenge and the odds were stacked against the tigers whose population was reduced at a time when this was considered normal practice.
Almost too late, India realised the very existence of the tiger was in jeopardy and government intervention was needed to curtail hunters and poachers alike. The tiger is still an endangered species but numbers in Ranthambore have increased significantly in recent years and our guests have good chances to spot one in the wild. To protect tigers further, there are moves to restrict access so a visit sooner rather than later is recommended. The park has a variety of other mammals and birds including langurs, spotted (Chital) and sambar deer, nilgai and barking Deer. Extensive bird life includes spur flown, jungle fowl, partridge, quails, crested serpent eagle, woodpeckers and flycatchers.
Due to topography and vegetation and the determination to find a tiger, game drives differ from those in Africa, providing a rewarding and uniquely Indian experience.
