Discover Burma

Pagodas, monasteries, hill stations, Inle Lake and an exclusive Jules Verne Pandaw Irrawaddy River cruise between Mandalay and the newly confirmed UNESCO site of Bagan

The name, Burma, comes from the Bamar people, the dominant group when the British arrived, although the original name, now used again, of Myanmar has the same linguistic provenance. ‘To be Burmese is to be Buddhist’ but their warmth is not solely a matter of religion; their happiness and serenity radiates from within.

Bagan is one of South East Asia’s great archaeological treasures boasting over 3,000 pagodas. According to Sir James Scott “Bagan is in many respects the most remarkable religious city in the world…the whole space is thickly studded with pagodas of all sizes and shapes...you cannot move a foot or hand without touching something sacred”. Today, the view across Bagan Plain remains most striking, redbrick pagodas interrupted by tall white spires reaching skywards.

Mandalay is the former British colonial capital and the market town for mountain regions of the Shan and Kachin people. Burma’s main city, Yangon (once Rangoon) is a city of style and dilapidated grandeur.
