Grand Tour of Italy

A fortnight of fabulous discovery by rail, blending guided visits with time for independent exploration, this tour covers cities and scenic landscapes across much of Italy, from Lake Garda to the Amalfi Coast, via Venice, Verona, Florence, and Rome

A big tour of Italy, condensed to fit a small time frame, our Grand Tour is designed for those who are time-short but travel-avid. An ideal introduction to the country, it is an opportunity to see a feast of highlight sights, and may act as a ‘taster menu’, whetting the appetite for a return visit to explore favourite places in depth. Travelling by train between very diverse destinations, and enjoying coach excursions and walking tours of the cities, the journey stretches from the country’s northernmost regions to its stunning southwestern shores. It starts in Lombardy, where stylish, metropolitan Milan completely contrasts with the scenery and serenity of Italy’s largest lake, Garda. Neighbouring Veneto encompasses the romance of Verona and the ‘streets of water’ in inimitable Venice. We cross Emilia-Romagna for a brief spell in Bologna’s vibrant squares. Tuscany’s focal point is Florence, with churches like art galleries, and medieval palaces now revered museums. Lazio is home to Rome, the ‘eternal city’, with ancient monuments at its heart, and the Vatican as its soul. Campania concludes the tour with the amazing Amalfi Coast, haunting Pompeii, and Naples, ‘the big city on the bay’.
