The largest island of the Dodecanese chain, Rhodes is renowned for its ancient, medieval and Ottoman monuments; museums of classical, Byzantine and folkloric relics; and conspicuously absent ‘Colossus’ bronze of Helios, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, its legend undiminished though it stood for just 70 years, over 2,000 years ago.
Yet these are the ‘supporting acts’ for the island’s most magnetic enclave, the atmospheric, awe-inspiring Old Town of the capital, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where cobbled streets and stone-paved alleys are lined with the inns and churches of the knights; lead through fountain squares to the lavishly proportioned Palace of the Grand Masters; and are as vibrant today as in their 14th century heyday.
With free time for idling or independent exploration, this journey through the centuries takes you on foot to the landmarks and museums of Rhodes town; by road to the art deco retreat of Kallithea Springs, the 15thcentury Filerimos Monastery, ancient ruins of Kameiros, and gorgeous village, bay and Acropolis of Lindos; and by boat to the scenic isle of Symi, to enjoy the pretty harbour town and to see the religious treasures and icons of Panormitis Monastery.
