Classical Tour of Greece

Discover the cities, temples, museums, theatres and ‘marbles’ of classical Greece from Athens to Delphi & Olympia, the rock monasteries of Meteora and the dramatic Peloponnese scenery

This classical tour of mainland Greece begins in the capital, Athens, littered with ancient relics in unexpected places, from tiny backstreets to traffic roundabouts; and studded with famous landmarks from the unmissable, iconic Acropolis to the Roman theatre and Arch of Hadrian, Byzantine churches, and Lykabettos Hill. The tour heads north from here to the modern town of Kalambaka, the gateway to majestic Meteora, where soaring rock pillars are topped by improbably perched, medieval monasteries; then travels down to Delphi, the sanctuary of Apollo and site of the enigmatic Oracle, seen in its heyday as ‘the centre of the world’. On the western side of the Peloponnese, visit ancient Olympia, never a town but a sanctuary, its buildings all related to the Gods and the Games, its many remarkable relics exhibited in two museums. Across the peninsula, picturesque Nafplion is guarded by a trio of forts and was, for a few short years, the first capital of independent Greece; Mycenae’s mountain-ravine setting forms a natural fortress described by Homer as a “nook of Argos”; and in the 4thcentury BC Epidaurus amphitheatre, amazing acoustics make a whisper audible across the auditorium of the UNESCO site.
