From Jerusalem to Petra

A journey through time, where past and present seem intertwined, this intriguing tour visits Roman ruins and biblical cities, desert camps and mystical monuments, and Red Sea and Dead Sea shores, on its crossing of Israel and Jordan, landmarks and legacies

A tour of two halves, three creeds, and 2,000 years of history, this journey begins in Israel. Stretching from northern highlands to the southern Negev desert, with western coastal plains and, to the east, the last miles of the Great Rift Valley, Israel is as varied in its terrain as it is complex in its culture, history and politics.

From metropolitan Tel Aviv’s 24 hour buzz, we travel to Haifa, known for its mixed population and merged Arabic/Jewish cultural heritage; to Ottoman Jaffa and Roman Caesarea; splendid synagogue mosaics; biblical scenes in Nazareth and in Capernaum, on Lake Galilee’s shore; and to Jerusalem, today a contested city, but in every era since the 1st-century AD, the most important pilgrimage site for Jewish, Islamic and Christian faiths, packed with places of worship. Historic Jordan is home to souks and citadels, lunar landscapes, desert dunes in sunset hues, and the salt-dense depths of the Dead Sea. Our tour here begins in refreshing Aqaba, its Red Sea setting the country’s only port, and includes a desert drive to Wadi Rum; revelations of Petra’s astonishing pink rock monuments, a secret seen only by Bedouins for six centuries; and the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth and the highlight of Jordan’s geology.
