Grand Tour of Northern India

Shaped by the Moghuls, Maharajas and British East India Company; sprinkled with sacred sites of the Sikh, Hindu, Muslim, and Buddhist religions; and covering hill stations, holy rivers, and the haunts of tigers, northern India is a remarkably rich touring ground

Travelling by Toy Train to Himalayan hill stations, flying to Kolkata, and Varanasi, and crossing the country by road for the cities of the Golden Triangle, this tour celebrates the region’s rich diversity. At the Sikh city of Amritsar, a nightly ‘Palki’ ritual takes the holy Guru Granth book ‘to bed’ every night, and back to the temple each morning, symbolically treating it as a human teacher. With its head often in the clouds, beguiling Shimla contrasts its colonial buildings with the colourful bazaar. In Old Delhi, India’s ‘capital territory’, monuments mark the life of Mahatma Gandhi; while Darjeeling is a return to Nature, enjoying Himalayan aspects; and in the old capital, Kolkata, the Hoogly River is the highlight for a sunset cruise. Exuberant Varanasi is one of the seven Hindu holy cities, hosting sacred rites on its Ganges ghats; nearby Sarnath is the site of an ancient Buddhist stupa; and Lucknow’s landmarks are the ‘imambara’ Muslim complexes. The Taj Mahal is the star of Agra’s show; tigers top the bill in Ranthambore; balloon rides are a bird’s eye view of the Pink City, Jaipur; and a clifftop castle oversees the ‘Blue City’ of Jodhpur. In Udaipur, palaces hem the shores of Lake Pichola, and metropolitan Mumbai concludes the tour.
