The popular image of the Anglo-Zulu war is coloured by the garrison battle at Rorke’s Drift featured in the 1964 film ‘Zulu’. This features prominently in the history of the region and recalls the siege of Ladysmith, the exploits of Winston Churchill as a War Correspondent and the battles at Spioenkop, all set against the glorious backdrop of the Drakensberg Mountains, known to the Zulu people as Ukhahlamba or ‘Barrier of Spears’.

The landlocked and independent kingdom of Eswatini, one of Africa’s best kept secrets reveals mountainous grandeur, lush forests, fertile valleys and the hot still beat of the African lowveld. The itinerary includes an extended stay at Kruger National Park, renowned as one of the largest and best managed game reserves in the world with over 700 species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibian. Top of most people’s ‘must see’ list will be the ‘Big Five’: elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard, all frequently sighted.

Day 1

Fly overnight from London Heathrow to Johannesburg.

Day 2

Drive to Pretoria, viewing the Union Buildings, Church Square and imposing Voortrekker Monument. Two nights at the 4-star Court Classique Hotel. Welcome dinner with a wine tasting.

Day 3

Full day tour in Johannesburg, visiting Soweto, the Hector Pietersen Memorial, Nelson Mandela’s House and the Military Museum. At Liliesleaf farm learn about the anti-apartheid struggle.

Day 4

Travel to the Kruger National Park (8 hrs) via the 'Province of the Rising Sun', Panorama Route, Blyde River Canyon and gold-mining village of Pilgrim's Rest. Three nights at the 3-star Nkambeni Tented Lodge at Kruger National Park.

Day 5

Full day open vehicle game drive with 'safari lunch'.

Optional game drive (£70) or bush walk (£78). Afternoon game drive.

Day 7

Travel to mountainous Eswatini (6 hrs) for a singing and dance performance. Visit the National Museum Overnight at the 4-star Foresters Arms Country Lodge.

Day 8

Visit the Mlilwane Nature Reserve and a traditional village to meet the Lady Chief and enjoy a nature walk. Continue to Zululand (5 hrs) along the scenic Lebombo Mountains. Two nights at the 4-star Ghost Mountain Inn.

Day 9

Morning game drive in Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Reserve, known for its rich wildlife including the white rhino. Visit a Zulu homestead and community.

Day 10

Lake Jozini cruise, home to crocodile, hippo and birdlife. Continue to Dundee (3 hrs) to visit Talana museum. Two nights at the 3-star Battlefields Country Lodge. Enjoy a ‘braai’ (typical South African barbecue with your local guide) in the ‘Moth Hall’ with ‘Battlefields’ memorabilia and local experts.

Day 11

Meet a specialist guide at Isandlwana for a moving account of this opening encounter in the Zulu War, then at Rorke's Drift of the heroic defence, where 11 VCs were awarded.

Day 12

With a specialist guide and minibus drive up to Spioenkop battlefield in Ladysmith (drive up in a mini-bus). Overnight in the Drakensberg mountains at the 4-star Cathedral Peak hotel. Time for a walk.

Morning at leisure. Transfer to the airport for the return flight.
