THE REVOLUTIONARY ROAD

Journey from Havana in the west to the eastern provinces along the historic route to discover more about the revolutionary movement conducted by Fidel Castro against the Cuban president

January 1st 1959 marked victory for the Cuban revolutionaries, after two years of fighting to defeat Fulgencio Batista. Led by Fidel Castro, with support from his brother, Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos, the rebels began their guerrilla war in the east and worked their way to the capital, Havana. Follow this historic revolutionary route with exploration of the island’s lesser-known eastern provinces, home to acres of national parks, historic towns and deserted beaches.

Santiago de Cuba is heralded as the birthplace of the Cuban Revolution thanks to its most famous citizen, Frank País, who formed an urban alliance which became instrumental in the success of Castro’s Revolution. The capital was then relocated to Havana in 1607, occupied by the Spanish and even the British for 11 months. Havana later became a popular American haunt at the start of the Prohibition era, but when Fidel Castro took power in 1959 he promptly closed the casinos, sent the mobsters back and divided up the hotels to provide homes for the rural poor.

To the west sits Cuba’s largest mountain range, Sierra Maestra, and the site of La Plata battle where the rebels took control of Batista’s barracks, their first successful attack, whilst Santa Clara is known as ‘the city of the heroic guerrilla’, referring to Che Guevara, and home to the last and most famous battle.

Founded in 1513, Bayamo is one of Cuba’s oldest towns with a long tradition of rebellion; the most dramatic event took place in 1869 when locals, not willing to surrender to the Spanish, burnt it down. The city of Camagüey also had its problems, being relocated twice due to invading pirates
