Travel the length of Central America from Panama to Guatemala

This fascinating tour of five Central American countries includes the smoking volcanoes and azure crater lakes of Nicaragua, rich Mayan heritage of Honduras, plus El Salvador. With its turbulent past now consigned to history, the Ruta de La Paz explores the guerrilla outposts and the role women played in the revolution. El Salvador is also the location of Joyas de Cerén where excavations have provided a unique insight into daily Maya life.

Special Event

The Aztec Potters Wheel

Visit a family of artisans dedicated to the tradition of pottery making to learn the unique techniques used by the Nahuatl people, more commonly associated with the Aztecs.

Day 1 Fly overnight from London Heathrow via Colombia to Panama City.

Day 2 Morning arrival and transfer to the Tryp Panama Centro Hotel for a two-night stay.

Day 3 A morning tour of Panama City including the Miraflores Locks on the Panama Canal. (B)

Day 4 Take the train along the historic Panama Canal railway to Colón. Continue to a traditional Emberá Indian village before departing for the Azuero (5 hrs) and overnight at Gran Hotel Azuero in Chitré. (B, L)

Day 5 Morning visit to the traditional colonial villages of the Azuero Peninsula before taking the Pan-American Highway to Boquete (5 hrs) and two nights at Finca Lerida, which stands amidst its own private coffee plantation. (B)

Day 6 Visit the coffee plantations before taking a tour to view a wide variety of hummingbirds and search for the elusive Quetzal. (B, L)

Day 7 Cross the border into Costa Rica and travel to the Golfito area. Stay two nights at Casa Roland in Golfito or the Esquinas Rainforest Lodge in the Piedras Blancas National Park. (B, L, D)

Day 8 Drive through the rainforest for a motorboat ride along the Golfo Dulce with its deserted beaches and dolphins. Later, visit Casa Orquideas Botanical Garden. (B, L, D)

Day 9 This morning there is a gentle hike in the Piedras Blancas National Park. Continue to the Carara National Park for two nights at the Hotel Punta Leona. (B)

Day 11 Fly to El Salvador. Transfer to Concepción de Ataco for overnight at the Hotel Misión de los Angeles. (B)

Day 12 Visit of Concepción de Ataco including the El Carmen Coffee estate.  Visit the Gastro Festival in Juayúa. Visit Cerro Verde National Park. Continue to San Salvador for overnight at the Hotel Mirador Plaza. (B)

Day 13 Panoramic tour of San Salvador including the Cathedral of the crypt of Bishop Romero, Church of El Rosario, Plaza Salvador del Mundo (B)

Day 14 Visit El Boquerón Park. Continue to the mountain town of Perquin en route visiting the mountain town of of Guatajiagua, home of the black clay pottery. Visit the Museo de la Revolución and the sombre village of El Mozote (guided in part by a former guerrilla).Overnight at the Hotel Perkin Lenka. (B)

Day 15 Travel to Suchitoto for two nights at the Hotel El Tejado, enjoy a walking tour including an indigo workshop. (B)

Day 16 Enjoy a boat tour on Lake Suchitlán or Lake Ilopango. Visit Cinquera village and take a walk through the ecological park of Cinquera Rain Forest park, with the option to swim at El Saltón. (B)

Day 17 Visit of the site of Joya del Ceren. Continue to Honduras for two nights at Hotel Marina Copán. (B)

Day 18 Visit Mayan Copán and the Sculpture Museum. (B)

Day 19 Depart for Río Dulce with a short stop at Maya Quirigua. Overnight at the Catamaran Island Hotel. (B)

Day 20 Take a boat from Río Dulce, passing the 'canyon' to Livingston, through the jungle with its exotic birds and colourful fauna, and pass by San Felipe fort. Transfer by road from Rio Dulce to the 3-star Camino Real Tikal (3½ hrs) for overnight. (B)

Day 21 Visit Tikal, a Maya masterpiece. Fly to Guatemala City and short transfer to Antigua. Overnight at Hotel Las Farolas. (B)

Day 22 City tour of colonial Antigua, the previous capital. Continue to Panajachel. Two nights at the Hotel Regis. (B)

Day 23 Sail on Lake Atitlán visiting the villages of the living Maya. (B)

Day 24 Drive to the highland market of Chichicastenango. Panoramic Guatemala City (3 hrs) tour and overnight at the Holiday Inn Hotel. (B)

Day 25 Guatemala city tour including the main square and Museum of Archaeology. Return flight to London via Colombia. (B)

Day 26 Afternoon arrival at Heathrow.
