Chilean Fjords: Terra Incognita

Explore Chile’s capital of Santiago and cruise the Chilean Fjords to the remote Icefields, lakes, islands and glaciers of northern Patagonia

Chile is a bewitching land of contrasts, arid deserts, beautiful lakes and ancient forests, snow-capped mountains, spectacular volcanoes, glittering lakes and fjords set against magnificent ranges, as well as ice fields and glaciers, with only a short season when these features can be seen at their dramatic best. None more so than San Rafael Glacier, a phenomenal sight, though one that is fast retreating.

Santiago, the capital, is surprisingly cosmopolitan with a rich cultural heritage, flanked by the Andes to the east and the Chilean Coastal Range to the west. Puerto Montt, at the gulf of Reloncaví is the starting point for voyages into the archipelago and Puerto Varas, the “city of roses” overlooks Lago Llanquihue, one of Chile’s largest lakes where the reflection of the eternally snow covered Osorno Volcano is mirrored in the clear waters. The cuisine is diverse and Chilean wine, especially its reds, are arguably some of the best in South America.
