Hot Samba, Cool Tango

Discover the scenic, colonial and musical diversity of Argentina & Brazil

Very few cities are as well described by their traditional dance styles as Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. Like its tango, Buenos Aires is intense, proud, dramatic, refined and elegant. Like its samba, Rio is exuberant, colourful and of immense panache and presence. The two cities make for fascinating comparisons, differing in many respects; Buenos Aires being developed by the Spanish and Rio by the Portuguese. Buenos Aires lives in elegant cafés, Rio on its beaches.

Argentina is a huge country; laid out over Europe and Africa it would obscure everything from London to Timbuktu, and extend as far east as Budapest. With a national population barely two-thirds that of the UK and nearly half being concentrated in its capital Buenos Aires, most of its magnificent landscapes have yet to be affected in any visual sense by the presence or actions of man.

However, Brazil is by far the largest country in South America and once by far the wealthiest. In the 17th century gold and diamonds were discovered and the ports of Paratí and Rio, the closest to the mines, achieved massive wealth, much of which was invested in fine architecture and art. Surprisingly it was Napoleon who provided Brazil with the possibility of an independent and prosperous future. When he invaded Portugal, the Portuguese court fled to Rio, and in 1815 declared it the capital of the Portuguese Empire. The Emperor, João VI returned to a liberated Portugal. His son, Dom Pedro declared himself Emperor of an independent Brazil, and under his successor the Empire registered many major achievements. The Imperial summer capital of Petrópolis was constructed and Rio became an international city of elegance. In 1889 however, Brazil's brief era of Imperial brilliance suddenly came to a close and a Republic was declared.
