Beginning this evening (Thursday 20 April at 8.30 pm on ITV) ‘Joanna Lumley’s Postcards’ joins the popular presenter as she reminisces about some of her favourite travel experiences. In episode one, The Egyptian Nile, Joanna relives fond memories of her fascinating journey along one of the world’s greatest waterways, personal highlights of which include visiting a Cairo market during Ramadan, riding a camel called Charlie Brown to the famous pyramids at Giza, sailing a felucca boat and spending time in Sudan’s spectacular Nubian Desert.

Retrace Joanna’s travels - and make memories of your own - on a holiday with specialist tour operator, Jules Verne. As well as a tempting selection of escorted itineraries in Egypt that includes Nile cruises and visits to some of the country’s most incredible archaeological sites (see example below), Jules Verne also offers an unforgettable journey to Sudan that takes in the ancient lands of Nubia. And, if like Joanna, you plan to travel solo, Jules Verne offers several departures with No Single Supplement (early booking recommended).

In EGYPT:

  • Combining Cairo with a full week’s Nile cruise, Treasures of the Nile ticks off many of Egypt’s must-see sights. Marvel at the wonder of the Pyramids and the Great Sphinx before boarding one of Jules Verne’s featured vessels for a sublime seven-night river sailing from Luxor that includes shore visits to the Valley of the Kings, the temple of Queen Hatshepsut, the Colossi of Memnon, and the Temples at Karnak, Esna, Philae, Kom Ombo and Luxor, as well as a cruise by felucca (or private boat) to the Kitchener Island Botanical Gardens and Elephantine Island.

Making this holiday even more memorable is a private cocktail reception at the Old Winter Palace Hotel followed by a visit to the illuminated Luxor Temple, whilst Jules Verne clients opting to upgrade to the five-star SS Misr (a deluxe propeller steam vessel considered to be “the most luxurious steamship on the Nile”) will also enjoy afternoon tea at the Old Cataract Hotel in Luxor. Featured in the 1978 film version of Agatha Christie’s ‘Death on the Nile’, the hotel offers a delightful step-back-in-time ambience as well as breathtaking views of the Nile and Elephantine Island.

The price is from £1,445 pp (two sharing) including flights (Heathrow), transfers, ten nights’ B&B, full board on the cruise, excursions as per the itinerary, and the services of guides and local representatives. Departs 29 September, 13 & 27 October, 3 & 17 November and 22 December 2017, and 5 & 12 January, 16 & 23 February and 9, 23 & 30 March 2018.

No Single Supplement (subject to availability) applies on all 2018 departures.

Details of Jules Verne’s full programme of escorted tours in Egypt, including The Original Nile Cruise (ten nights from £1,795 pp) and The 600 Mile Nile (12 nights from £2,145 pp), can be found here.

In SUDAN:

  • Travel north from Khartoum to the ancient lands of Nubia on an eight-night journey to the Kingdom of the Black Pharaohs that reveals a treasure chest of extraordinary archaeological sites, dotted along the Nile. Boasting more pyramids than Egypt, this is a country where impressive ancient temple ruins can be visited at a relaxed pace, without seeing another tourist bus for miles.

Amongst the many highlights of this holiday are visits to the Archaeological Museum in Khartoum (which houses two entire temples rescued by UNESCO from Lake Nasser before the area was flooded), the Western Deffufa monument, the Pyramids of Nuri (and an excavated tomb carved from the rock below), the 1st century Apedemak temple at Naga with its bas-relief images, and a Nubian village. Travel to the Bayuda Desert, where camel and donkey caravans roam, stay for two nights in a tented camp at Meroe from where the 40 pyramids of the Royal Necropolis can be seen, and enjoy a traditional Sudanese evening with local music and dancing, and a whirling dervish performance.

The price is from £2,845 pp (two sharing) including flights (Heathrow), photography and travel permits, entrance fees, transfers, seven nights’ full board (breakfast & lunch only in Khartoum), excursions as per the itinerary, and the services of guides and local representatives. One overnight flight. Departs 12 October, 9 November & 7 December 2017, and 15 February, 15 March & 12 April 2018.

No Single Supplement (subject to availability) applies on 12 October 2017 & 12 April 2018 departures.
