Secret Andalucía

Discover hidden gems of Andalucian Spain including the UNESCO sites of Baeza and Úbeda, Tabernas desert, Guadix caves and Sierra de Cazorla National Park

Spain’s southern region of Andalucía offers an enchanting mix of cultures, landscapes, traditions and gastronomy, where Iberians, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Moors left their heritage. Travel through five out of eight provinces of Andalucía; Málaga, Almería, Jaén, Córdoba and Seville, off the beaten track to explore parts less known to visitors, encompassing varied scenery, remote whitewashed towns, cave houses, desert, olive oil culture and impressive Renaissance and Moorish palaces.

The Alcazaba dominates in Almería and is one of the best preserved fortresses in Spain today, visible from any part of the city and offers spectacular views, the biggest citadel built by the Moors in the Iberian Peninsula. This magnificent construction started in 955 AD at the height of Islamic domination and was completed a century later, and then greatly refurbished by the Catholic Monarchs and Charles I.

Jaén province, best known for its landscape of countless olive groves and rugged mountain scenery is home to the World Heritage sites and Renaissance towns of Baeza and Úbeda which thrived during the “Reconquista” period of the Middle Ages, when the Christians regained territory from the Moors.

The Water Synagogue in Úbeda, a medieval building of intricate tunnels, discovered recently by pure chance and opened to the public in 2010 is a perfect example of the charming hidden sites that Andalucía has to offer. Úbeda is also home to the Capilla del Salvador, the finest church of the city, a masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture
