Touring Montenegro from medieval towns to Mediterranean bays, via Europe’s most southerly fjord and its last virgin forest, this journey explores the ancient history of the young country, revealing its culture, customs and cuisine, at a relaxed, refreshing pace

With beguiling towns, beautiful coasts, and a Balkan back-story of Roman, Venetian, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian occupancy, Montenegro takes influences from them all, and adds blissful scenery and natural biodiversity. This tour shows every aspect of the tiny country, revealing hidden gems from sea shores to mountain retreats. The cobbled streets of bewitching Kotor hem a breathtaking Adriatic fjord, UNESCO listed Kotor Bay. A hub of culture and eclectic architecture, regal Cetinje blends museums and churches with royal palaces. Arcadian journeys take you to Montenegro’s most revered pilgrimage place, Ostrog Monastery, perched 900m above a valley; to Durmitor National Park, UNESCO protected for its ‘outstanding universal value’, and home to bears, wolves, wild cats and golden eagles; the Tara River canyon, with the deepest gorges in Europe; and the biosphere reserve of Biogradska Gora, with one of just three remaining virgin rainforests in Europe. The easy-tempo beach resort of Petrovac is well-placed for visits to clifftop Ulcinj, with stories of pirates, slaves and gods; to the towers and turrets of Stari Bar in their Rumija Mountain setting; and the birdlife and waterlilies of serene Lake Skadar.
