Discover the imperial capitals of the world’s biggest country: Moscow and St. Petersburg, linked by the high-speed ‘Sapsan’ train
Moscow - 3 nights
St. Petersburg - 4 nights
Moscow was the capital of Russia from the early 15th century until 1712 when Tsar Peter the Great moved his capital to St. Petersburg. It regained its status as capital in 1918. In the 18th century, the influence of Italian and French architects, which so inspired St. Petersburg, spread to Moscow and the surrounding countryside and it was thus that the great families of the period erected splendid houses and palaces. Red Square in Moscow is one of the largest of its kind and is flanked by St. Basil’s Cathedral, the GUM department store and at its very heart, the Kremlin. Originally a fortress, this 60-acre architectural icon houses some of Russia’s finest churches, palaces and monasteries.
St. Petersburg, the most beautiful of Russian cities, was the vision of Peter the Great who, in 1703, ordered its construction beginning with the Fortress of Peter & Paul, a stronghold guarding the mouth of the Neva River; later bringing the finest European architects to create an elegant ensemble of palatial buildings. Built on a hundred islands and criss-crossed by canals and innumerable bridges, it is a city of palaces, churches and cathedrals.
