Ferry Crossing - 1 night
Travel conveniently across the Gulf of Finland from Helsinki to arrive at magnificent and exquisite St. Petersburg. The city’s origins lie in the youthful years of Peter the Great, born in Moscow and who, as a young man, studied shipbuilding in England. This led him, on becoming Tsar, to aspire to move away from Moscow to create a new city and capital. The Empresses who followed Peter – Catherine, Anna and Elizabeth – beautified the city, constructing elegant palaces and town houses, amassing great art collections, many of which can be seen today in the Hermitage. The richly decorated Yusupov Palace with its Rasputin exhibition, lavish interiors and exquisite private theatre, was once home to Russia’s second richest family.
Since the fall of Communism, St. Petersburg has been restored to its former glory. In the Russian countryside at Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin), lies the great blue and gold rococo Catherine Palace reflecting the contrasting styles of the Italian, Rastrelli, and the Scott, Cameron.
