From Moldova and Transnistria to the painted monasteries of Romania
Chisinau - 3 nights
Gura Humorului - 2 nights
Iasi - 1 night
Chisinau - 1 night
This arrangement combines the less-visited north eastern part of Romania with the relatively unknown neighbouring country of Moldova. These two areas once formed the historical region of Moldavia, which existed until 1862, when it joined Wallachia to form modern Romania.
Moldavia had its share of problems from invading Hungary and Poland but their toughest challenge came from the relentless Turks during the reign of Prince Stephen the Great of Moldavia. He gained notoriety in Europe for foiling their advance but his son and successor was not so successful, and by the middle of the 16th century, the Ottoman Empire took control of their affairs. Stephen the Great was a religious and cultural man, and it was his influence that gave rise to a school of native painters who have bequeathed some true masterpieces of the fresco technique found on the 16th and 17th-century painted monasteries of Bucovina. Still, after all this time, they retain their vibrancy but alas the secret of their method died with these painters.
