Discover the great heritage of the captivating Island of the Grand Masters and the George Cross – from the historic capital to the coast and the countryside
Sliema or Valletta - 4 nights
Although known perhaps as a holiday island, Malta's focal position in the Mediterranean and historic associations have created a fascinating heritage. Equidistant between Spain and the Holy Land, Malta is an archipelago of seven islands of which three, Malta Island, Gozo and Comino are inhabited.
Malta has been coveted throughout its long history with the first settlers arriving from Sicily around 5300 BC. Phoenicians, ancient Greeks, Romans and Arabs each followed in time leaving their mark. It was leased to the Order of St. John, a military order of Knights Hospitallers, led by the Grandmaster in the 16th century. They were later evicted by the French who in turn yielded to the English.
Malta is today an independent EU country, but with a special link to the UK after the island received the George Cross, the highest award for civil bravery during the Second World War, in 1942.
