The palaces, castles, churches, gardens and magnificent scenery of 'the Kingdom of Naples' and exclusive Ravello on the Amalfi coast
Naples - 5 nights
Ravello - 2 nights
Naples or Neapolis (new city), built by the Greeks has been important ever since, ruled in turn by the Romans, Normans, French, Spanish and (of course!) Italians. Indeed, the goal of the ‘Grand Tour’ was Naples and no gentleman’s (or gentlelady’s) education was complete without a visit – in the 18th-century Goethe coined the phrase ‘see Naples and Die’?!. Explore the alleyways and piazzas of Naples as seen in the new drama ‘My Brilliant Friend’ based on the novel by Elena Ferrante.
Neapolitan guides reveal the great heritage of the Kingdom of Naples whose historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site but still a living city and capital of ‘Campania Felix’. The Bourbons’ palace and park of Capodimonte houses an excellent collection of Neapolitan art whilst Caserta is even grander, modelled on Versailles with a park designed by Vanvitelli and an ‘English garden’ as suggested by the British envoy, Lord Hamilton, who also hosted Admiral Nelson in Naples. The volcanic island of Ischia reveals ‘La Mortella’, the enchanting garden of Lady Walton, widow of the composer Sir William Walton and a living memorial to his life and work.
Perched 1,000 feet above Italy’s most beautiful coastline and originally built during the Duchy of Amalfi, a wealthy maritime republic during the Byzantine and Norman era, Ravello’s inaccessibility and beauty has attracted a variety of musicians, artists, writers and travellers – most notably Wagner was drawn to Ravello as ‘the magic garden of Klingsor’, setting for Parsifal.
