Secret Lake Como

Discover the three corners of Lake Como from the alpine north to sophisticated Como town and the lesser-known Lecco arm, staying at a Jules Verne favourite hotel

Grand Hotel Menaggio and Lake Como are long-time Jules Verne favourites that attract many returning visitors to this unusually shaped lake of three arms. We therefore present a new option including new excursions by boat, train and small bus to its lesser-known ‘three corners’, contrasting the dramatic snow-capped mountains and more remote villages of the ‘wild’ north with the scenic south and the former Roman town of Como with its famous cathedral and elegant piazzas. Climb above Como town for panoramic views, cruise the secret arm of Lake Como, also known as ‘Lago di Lecco’ and explore the alpine north.

Lake Como remains the most elegant of the Italian lakes. Its golden age came in the 19th century when its romantic scenery and equitable climate attracted the likes of Queen Victoria, Flaubert, Tennyson and Liszt, but centuries earlier it was favoured by Julius Caesar and both Pliny's were born here.

Today, George Clooney and Donatella Versace are amongst the celebrities who own secluded villas, whilst the lakeside towns with their houses of pastel pinks and yellows make the area a highly sought after film location.

Lake Como takes its dreamlike atmosphere from flower-filled gardens reflected in the water, secluded villas, little lakeside towns with steep narrow streets, all set against the dramatic backdrop of the southern Alps. Cruising the lake itself is a rewarding experience allowing fine views and different perspectives, a photographer's paradise!

Shaped in the form of an inverted 'Y', the northern end and the Lecco arm reveal dramatic peaks. Charming towns and villas set against a backdrop both less rugged and more genteel populate the Como arm.
