Visit Hungary

The jewel in Hungary’s crown is its capital, Budapest, built strategically around the Danube. Arts and many beautiful buildings testify to the city’s close connections with Paris, Vienna and Berlin. Explore this peculiarly split city and the surrounding areas with us and discover Hungary’s treasures.

Where you'll visit on our escorted tours to Hungary

The capital is split into two distinct areas: the castle area of Buda and the more diverse Pest. Combine the two and you have a very cosmopolitan city filled to the brim with history, culture and the arts.

Buda is made up of hills, unspoilt townhouses, Fisherman's Bastion, the Mathias coronation church, the Royal Palace complex and the Hungarian National Gallery. Pest offers grand boulevards, the opera, Heroes’ Square, St. Stephen’s Basilica and the glorious parliament building, with its striking Neo-Gothic façade and sculpted figures of Hungarian kings, princes and historical notables.

There are also many architectural treats further along the Danube’s valley, where you can encounter a different side of Hungary, with the Danube Waltz sailing to Esztergom and visting Visegrad Fortress where you can see the Danube bend. Enjoy a more active escorted tour, and hike through stunning scenery with Walking the Blue Danube.

Budapest comes to life over Christmas with romantic architecture, a chilly winter atmosphere and the traditional Christmas market at Vörösmarty Square, offering mulled wine and chimney cake. Christmas Markets on the Danube offers the chance to explore some unique cities and absorb the Christmas atmosphere during the advent season while cruising the Danube from Austria to Slovakia.

When to book your escorted touring holidays to Hungary

City breaks are enjoyable at any time of year, but we recommend spring - autumn to make the most of the mild continental climate. There are four distinct seasons, with a very warm summer and cold winters where snow is not uncommon.
