The Southern Rhine

A new cruise from Cologne to Switzerland aboard A-ROSA AQUA with a no-fly option, cruising through the Rhine Gorge with visits to Mainz, Strasbourg, Colmar, Breisach, Koblenz and option to ascend to Mount Rigi

For a long time the Rhine was a border between the Roman Empire and German Barbarian tribes to the east with many long-established settlements lining the west bank. Until the 18th century Germany was split into individual principalities, often in dispute, leading to a large number of castles, especially along the Rhine where barons could fix and levy tolls almost at will, now creating dramatic views from the river amidst stunning scenery.

Nowadays of course, the Rhine lends itself to gentler pursuits – a leisurely perambulation along the riverbank or a relaxing cruise, a pursuit popularised by Queen Victoria and English Gentlemen on the Grand Tour. Indeed Queen Victoria made a ‘secret’ expedition to Switzerland describing in her journal ‘a most successful day’ riding to the top of Mount Rigi. Why not discover Lake Lucerne and the Swiss Alps riding up Mount Rigi, not on a donkey as Victoria but by the famed Swiss transport system! Thus this new programme affords the opportunity to reach the Swiss Alps by train and ship.
