Secret Germany

By train to Nuremberg for a new exceptional cruise on board A-ROSA on the lesser known Main-Danube Canal & Main river before joining the Rhine to Cologne with visits to Bamberg, Würzburg, Wertheim, Frankfurt and Koblenz

Discover traditional, medieval German towns on this fascinating voyage along the Main-Danube canal, the Main and the Middle Rhine. The Main-Danube canal connects the Main and the Danube rivers across the European Watershed from Kelheim via Nuremberg to Bamberg. The idea for this vast engineering project originated in 793AD with Charlemagne, although the canal wasn’t actually completed until 1992 and includes no fewer than 16 locks. The Main is the longest tributary to the Rhine, it rises in north-eastern Bavaria and flows west through central Germany for 525 kilometres to meet the Rhine close to Mainz. Between Bingen and Bonn, the Rhine flows as the Middle Rhine through the Rhine Gorge, a formation created by erosion. The section from Bingen to Koblenz is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with more than 40 castles and fortresses from the Middle Ages and many wine-villages.

Nuremberg is intriguing for its association with the Second World War, as the site of many pre-war Nazi rallies, and, later, the war crime trials. The city captivates with its cobbled streets with classic half-timbered houses, an enchanting castle (rebuilt after wartime bombings) and the Gothic Church of St. Lawrence.

Bamberg, renowned as one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Germany, was planned by Emperor Heinrich II in 11th century as a Franconian capital, it sits on seven lush green hills, similar to the city whose grandeur it was meant to equal – Rome!

Würzburg is set amongst vineyards on the banks of the Main. It was an important city in the Middle Ages, but owes its present appearance to the prince-bishops of the Schönborn family, who commissioned many wonderful baroque buildings in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Wertheim is a place which remains wonderfully undiscovered and is home to one of Germany’s lesser known but impressive russet-walled 12th-century castle.

Frankfurt, known for the gleaming headquarters of the European Central Bank, at its heart is an unexpectedly charming city, with half-timbered buildings huddled in its quaint medieval Altstadt (old town) and cosy apple-wine taverns.
