Not only famous for its vineyards but also for its beauty, Bordeaux is adorned with ornate architecture and open squares, with an international vibe that inspires old school elegance. Explore the enchanting medieval village of Saint-Emilion renowned as much for its beautiful buildings and scenery as it is for its wine. The steep, narrow, cobbled streets, overlooked by the Romanesque church and iconic Tour du Roy tower are a reminder of the town’s long history. Day 1 Travel by Eurostar from St. Pancras to Bordeaux via Lille. Transfer to the Intercontinental Bordeaux Le Grand Hotel located in the heart of the city. A guided walking tour of Bordeaux is followed by a tasty wine experience at the Cite du Vin. Embark on an immersive, sensory adventure to discover the cultures and civilisations of world wines. Explore the exhibition space with an interactive tablet and enjoy a unique experience. End the excursion with a glass of wine on the 8th floor Belvedere. In the event of a late arrival, the walking tour will take place on Day 5).

Day 2 Drive along the scenic ‘Route des Château’ for our first visit of the day. Learn which grape varieties are used in the region, how the soil, climate and other elements influence the flavour of the wine. Begin our wine tasting at Château Phelan Segur in the St. Estèphe appellation producing textbook meaty, solid and long lived wines that are classic of their appellation. Lunch is taken at the charming Café Lavinal in the heart of the Pauillac Appellation. Lunch for the September Harvest departure is taken in the grounds of Château Phelan Segur). Visit Château Beychevelle, a famous classified growth of the Saint Julien appellation. A perfect example of the 18th-century Bordeaux wine architecture, the Château, called “the Versailles of the Medoc” contrasts perfectly well with the stunningly modern wine cellars. Lastly we make our way to Château Prieuré Lichine, classified growth of the famous Margaux appellation. Founded in the 12th century by monks from Vertheuil Abbey, the priory of Cantenac produced well reputed wines from the very beginning. Return to the hotel. Dinner at Gordon Ramsey’s Le Bordeaux bistro restaurant. (B, L, D)

Day 3 Depart for Saint Emilion, visit and tasting at Château Beauregard, in the Pomerol appellation. This impressive stately home is set in an ideal location on the southern side of the famous Catusseau plateau in Pomerol and has a magnificent gravel and clay terroir. Our next tasting is at Château Beau-Séjour Bécot which enjoys the unique beauty and privileges of its region due to its location on a clay and limestone plateau. The Becot family owner of this outstanding vineyard, have been living in Saint Emilion since the French Revolution. Enjoy lunch at La Terrasse Rouge; designed by the famous French designer Jean Nouvel the restaurant sits in the heart of the Saint Emilion vineyards. We take a guided tour of the medieval village and learn about the local legend of the monk Saint Emilion who gave his name to the village. The last visit of the day is a private visit and tasting at Château Bauduc, owned by British couple Gavin and Angela Quinney who left London 20 years ago for the French life. They now supply house wines for Gordon Ramsay and Rick Stein. Enjoy an aperitif on the terrace. Return to the hotel. (B, L)

Day 4 Bordeaux for the Bassin d’Arcachon for a panoramic private cruise around the bay. Cruise past the oyster beds, Bird Island and the two emblematic fisherman’s houses on stilts, Les Cabanes Tchanquées. Continue down the peninsular for lunch at a waterfront restaurant in Cap Ferret with a view of the Dune du Pyla. Return by boat to Arcachon with free time to explore this resort town – climb the impressive Dune du Pyla or enjoy an aperitif watching the sun set over the bay. Dinner is taken in Arcahon before transferring back to the hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 5 A morning walking tour of Bordeaux includes a visit to a local market for brunch with generous tastings of oysters, local cheeses, charcuterie and patisserie. The afternoon is free for independent exploration. (B)

Day 6 Bordeaux Visit Château de Roquetaillade, a historic monument dating from the 12th century. Roquetaillade was renovated and transformed by Viollet le Duc in the late 19th century who added stunning interiors. The castle has been lived in by the same family for over 700 years. Lunch is taken at La Table du Lavoir, located in the heart of the vineyards of Château Smith Haut Lafitte, followed by a wine tasting at Château de Cerons in the Graves appellation, a 17th century jewel; de Cerons has retained all its original charm. Owned by the Perromat family this listed building in the Southern Graves takes the name of the smallest appellation in Bordeaux, specialising in sweet white wine. Caroline Perromat will share her love of the property and its unique architectural and design heritage. Dinner for our last night is at Le Quatrième Mur. This French chic and contemporary brasserie owned by the famous TV chef and Michelin star holder Philippe Etchebest is set amongst the spectacular decor of the 18th-century Bordeaux Opera house. Day 7 After breakfast return by Eurostar to St. Pancras. Alternatively choose to extend your stay at the delightful Châteaux for two nights. (B)
