Barging between Paris and Burgundy on our exclusive new Péniche charter via the Châteaux of royal Fontainebleau and Vaux-le-Vicomte, artistic Barbizon and sacred Sens
Day 1 - Paris
Day 2 - Vaux-le-Vicomte/Melun
Day 3 - Barbizon/Moret-sur-Loing
Day 4 - Fontainebleau/Montereau
Day 5 - Sens
Day 6 - Joigny/Sens
Day 7 - Return Journey
This exclusive cruise affords insight into France’s cultural, royal, religious and artistic heritage. Sacred Sens was the seat of the primate of northern France, similar to Canterbury and Thomas Becket spent years in exile here before his assassination in Canterbury Cathedral at the orders of Henry II (‘will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest’), as illustrated in the stained glass of this first-ever Gothic cathedral. View his vestments, Roman mosaics, Byzantine relics and taste a Thomas Becket beer!
Home to Royalty and developed over 800 years, the richly furnished Château de Fontainebleau is best known for Napoleon’s farewell from the horseshoe staircase. Vaux-le-Vicomte was commissioned by Le Fouquet, Louis XIV’s chamberlain, an exquisite masterpiece with architecture by Le Vau, paintings by Le Brun and gardens by Le Nôtre. Such was the grandeur that the sun king imprisoned Le Fouquet and initiated Versailles as a copy!
Pre-Impressionist landscape artists came to Barbizon at weekends inspired by Fontainebleau Forest, often leaving paintings as payment.
