Impressions of the Seine

A river journey from Paris to the coast of Normandy through the magnificent scenery that inspired the Impressionist painters, visiting Monet’s house at Giverny, Honfleur & Rouen

The sights and sounds of the River Seine were the inspiration for great French painters such as Monet, Manet, Cézanne, Gauguin and Renoir. Their paintings evoke a romantic image of France that epitomises the appeal of this area and is an enlightening theme of this river cruise.

The modern visitor cannot fail to be enchanted by the landscapes that inspired those great masters, whereby every twist and turn in the river reveals monasteries, abbeys, villages and châteaux. Paris, the birthplace of the French language, art and civilisation, has the best selection of museums.

Monet lived in his retreat at Giverny for 40 years and drew inspiration from the beautiful gardens. Rouen, the capital of Upper Normandy, evokes thoughts of Joan of Arc being burned at the stake, Monet’s paintings of the cathedral and Flaubert’s Madame Bovary.

The coastal region of Normandy is an area of enchanting beauty with gentle undulating woods, orchards, pastures and clear streams where the painters and Parisian high society retreated in summer.
