Day 1 Fly from London Heathrow to Helsinki. Transfer via Mikkeli, the former border town between Sweden and Russia and a bustling trading point during that period, to Savonlinna (4 hrs) for overnight at 4-star Original Sokos Hotel Seurahuone (July - Summer Hotel Tott).
Day 2 Tour of the 15th-century three-tower Olavinlinna Castle, the northernmost medieval stone fortress still standing followed by a steam boat cruise around Lake Saimaa. Visit Kerimäki Church, the largest wooden church in the world. Travel via Veijö Rönkkönen Sculpture Park to Sahanlahti Resort for a two night stay. (B, D)
Day 3 Scenic drive over many bridges and ferry crossings to Niinisaari. Enjoy a lesson baking Karelian Pastries at a local house followed by home-cooked buffet lunch. Visit to Rakokivi, a geological formation from the ice age and Puumala lakeside town to view a Salpa Line steel and concrete bunker. Optional evening sauna (bookable locally). (B, L)
Day 4 Travel via Imatra and Lappeenranta to Porvoo. Walking tour of the idyllic old town with its well-preserved wooden houses and cobble-stoned streets. Overnight at the 4-star Hotel Haikko Manor & Spa. (B)
