Staying a few days at the historic 5-star Art Nouveau style Hotel Paris at a special tariff ‘whilst the crowds are away’, includes a walking tour in the Old Town and the castle area
Prague - 3 nights
In Bohumil Hrabal's novel 'I served the King of England', the narrator describes some first impressions of one of the world's unique hotels. 'The Hotel Paris was a wonder to behold' he recalls - 'so beautiful in fact, that I almost fell over. The mirrors on the wall, the copper banisters, the door handles, and the impeccably polished chandeliers - you would think you were in a golden palace, what with all those red carpets and glass doors'. Thankfully neither the totalitarian nor the developer's hand has over the intervening period ravaged this splendid scene whilst the facilities and bedrooms of the hotel have been up-dated to suit the demands of the modern traveller. The hotel itself was built in 1907 in an elaborate art nouveau style then prevalent in Paris, Berlin and Vienna. In fact the theme of this decorative form of art (c. 1890-1910) continues with magnificent examples at the nearby Municipal House, the Mucha Museum and Café Europa.
Prague is best explored on foot (though it's a pleasure to hop on and off the still functioning electric trams) and a gentle stroll from the hotel along the 'Royal Route' introduces these beautiful buildings at eye-level and culminates with the splendour of baroque palaces around the Old Town square. Of course there is much more to be seen including Prague's 'Little Quarter' around the Charles Bridge and not forgetting all those golden spires and musical connections with museums dedicated to Smetana, Dvorak and Mozart.
