The perfect way to discover the spectacular southern Dalmatian coastline

This leisurely cruise from Dubrovnik to Split will bring you the best of the southern Dalmatian islands on a private Jules Verne sailing. Enjoy time on board the MV Aurelia, one of the newest and most luxurious small ships in Croatian waters, with just 19 cabins, 9 of which boast private balconies, ideal for watching the sublime sunsets with a glass in hand. Experience the wonders of the coast of Croatia, explore its history, its stunning landscapes, its azure waters and fabulous food. Croatia’s dramatic cliffs and crystal waters, have inspired poets from Byron to Virgil and Shaw, to Ezra Pound. We take you to historic towns that were once centres of the Greco-Roman, Byzantine and Renaissance worlds. The iconic coastal cities of Dubrovnik and Split are magnificent and Croatia’s islands give visitors something new to discover every day. Ston is home to the longest fortifications in Europe; Mljet’s Benedictine monastery on the Isle of St. Mary lies on a striking salt lake; Korcula’s 13th-century cathedral of St. Mark is an architectural triumph with Gothic and Renaissance elements; Vis has ruins from the 4th-century; the island of Biševo hosts the natural phenomena of the Blue Cave; and Hvar is a treasure revealing palaces, monasteries and churches.

Day 1 Fly from London Gatwick to Dubronvik. Transfer to the port to store your luggage, then take a walking tour of the old town. Encircled by medieval city walls and filled with terracotta-topped historic houses, Dubrovnik’s traffic-free Old Town is stunningly scenic from a distance and deliciously atmospheric from within. The special charm of this ancient town is in the buildings that have remained from the time of the old Dubrovnik Republic. Visit Gothic and Renaissance palaces, Baroque churches and the yacht marina, nestled below the ramparts, where 16th-century merchant ships once moored. Take the cable car and enjoy views from the Old Town to Srđ mountain and the mighty ramparts to Elaphiti Islands. Return to our vessel for a welcome cocktail and dinner on board. Overnight in Dubrovnik. (D)

Day 2 Enjoy the magical scenery as the ship cruises around Dubrovnik’s city walls before continuing to one of the Elaphiti Islands for a swimming stop. Later, sail for the small village of Slano, the last bay on the Dubrovnik Riviera, a peaceful fishermen’s village and the starting point for our visit to Ston. An escape from the standard tourist route offering delicious seafood, great scenery, old stone houses and the longest fortifications in Europe. Founded in the 14th-century as part of the Dubrovnik Republic, the walls stretch for 5km forming an irregular pentagon and include 40 towers and five fortresses. Continue to Mali Ston, a small fishing village famous for its oysters and mussel beds; enjoy a tasting of these delicacy. Time at leisure before returning to the vessel for dinner. (B, L, D)

Day 3 Cruise north to the magnificent island of Mljet. It was here according to legend, that Odysseus was shipwrecked on his return from the Trojan War and kept prisoner by the beautiful nymph Calypso, for seven years. Stroll alongside the famous salt lakes in Mljet National Park and enjoy a boat ride to St. Mary Isle for the ancient Benedictine monastery. Continue to Pomena, dinner on board. (B, L, D)

Day 4 Early morning departure towards the island of Korčula; best known as the birthplace of Marco Polo, rich in vineyards, olive groves and small villages, it harbours a glorious old town. Stop for lunch in one of the secluded bays. Afternoon walking tour to explore this enchanting, preserved medieval city; ringed by imposing defences, this coastal citadel is dripping with history, with marble streets rich in Renaissance and Gothic architecture. Evening excursion to a small nearby village for a typical Dalmatian dinner and to learn a little of the local heritage and traditional way of living. (B, L, D)

Day 5 Continue to the island of Vis; the furthest inhabited island from the mainland, once a strategic naval Yugoslav base and closed to the public for years, it is now a captivating bohemian getaway. This isolation has preserved the island from over-development and thus Vis has a special charm – “the Mediterranean as it once was”, making it an intriguing destination. Visit the remains of ancient Issa, the first urban centre in Croatia, dating from the 4th-century BC. See the remains of the Roman thermal place, the City museum and the beautiful Villae Rusticae. Sample some exquisite local wines, Vis has its own distinct grape; vugava, a white varietal that’s been cultivated here since ancient times. Later, enjoy a stroll along the waterfront. Dinner is under your own arrangement. (B, L)

Day 6 Early in the morning we cruise towards the small island of Biševo to visit the Blue Cave, a magnificent natural phenomenon, famous for the layer of iridescent blue that fills the cave when light reflects off the water and the white seabed (weather permitting). Continue towards the island of Hvar with a swim stop and lunch on board at the Pakleni Islands. Hvar, the longest and sunniest island in the Adriatic is known for glorious lavender fields and breathtaking beauty. We arrive in the afternoon for a tour of the town with a stop at the Benedictine Convent and the Renaissance cathedral, with its original tower. Evening at leisure. Hvar offers numerous restaurants and bars. Dinner under own arrangement. (B, L)

Day 7 Sail to the Island of Brač and visit the picturesque town of Bol. Enjoy the Old Town, walk along the promenade or swim at Zlatni Rat (the Golden Cape). Continue to Split to enjoy a walking tour. With an abundance of Roman architecture and the monumental palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian at its heart, Split boasts possibly one of the greatest remaining Roman structures. Farewell dinner on board. (B, L, D)

Day 8 After breakfast transfer to Trogir, another coastal gem with a wealth of stately Romanesque and Renaissance architecture. Enjoy a short stop for independent exploration before transferring to the airport for your homeward flight.
