Bosnia & Herzegovinia

Tucked deep into the Southeast corner of Europe is the largely land-locked country of Bosnia and Herzegovina. A large inland country with a small stretch of land that breaks through between the two halves of Croatia, ending with a beautiful rocky shoreline. The landscapes of internal Bosnia and Herzegovina are wild, tangled and green, and are criss-crossed by bright blue rivers.

Nestled in the centre of the country is Sarajevo, which is the old capital of Yugoslavia. This is the perfect place to discover the history of the state, which has since fragmented into separate countries. Sarajevo is the city where the assassination of the Archduke of Hungary took place, setting into motion a war that immersed the entire continent. Today, ancient buildings pockmarked by the war that tore the country apart, jostle like crooked teeth along the winding roads. There are museums to be explored, busy cafés to be visited and lively bars to be frequented.

In the areas surrounding Sarajevo, layers of history can be peeled back to reveal a fascinating timeline of human existence. Indeed, Ilidza has a historical tradition dating back to Neolithic times, with Roman baths and a medieval settlement also located in the riverside location. In more recent times, the town was used as the headquarters for the peacekeeping NATO troops, but today it is a busy and historically-fascinating destination.
