Secret Tirol

Discover the beautiful Tirol region whilst based in the picturesque village of Ebbs, visit Salzburg, travel by steam train in the Ziller valley and by boat to Herrenchiemsee in Bavaria

Despite the dramatic alpine terrain, the Tirol has been settled since the Neolithic age, verified by the discovery of a man preserved in ice in the Ötztal Alps in 1991.

Tirol fell to the Habsburgs in 1363, but it wasn’t until the rule of Emperor Maximilian that the province developed as he boosted Tirol’s status by transforming Innsbruck into the administrative and cultural capital. When the last Tirolean Habsburg, Archduke Sigmund Franz, died in 1665, the duchy of Tirol was directly ruled from Vienna.

Tirol, now just one of the nine provinces of Austria, offers a rich heritage. Tiroleans still maintain many aspects of their old way of life: traditional dress and customs as well as good fare and hospitality. The alpine climate and landscape led each valley and village to develop a separate way of life, with their own accent, vocabulary and farmhouse style.

A classic example will be our base, the village of Ebbs, situated in one of the most glorious Tirolean valleys between Salzburg and Innsbruck, to the east of the Inn river and at the foot of the Zahmer Kaiser. The village is surrounded by expansive meadows and famous for its horses, it houses the world’s Haflinger centre at the Stud Farm.

A short sortie into neighbouring Germany to the largest lake in Bavaria, Chiemsee, also known as the ‘Bavarian Sea’ visits two of its islands and King Ludwig’s Royal Palace of Herrenchiemsee, styled on Versailles.
