What is your favourite tour and why?

I have three favourite tours, which are impossible to choose between:

The Coast of Explorers & Emperors - Stunning  scenery throughout and a wonderful combination of contrasts from the hectic streets of Dubrovnik to the tranquil salt lakes in Mijet National Park. Perfect balance of cruising and sightseeing.

Ol' Man River - The tour started in Memphis before we boarded the American Queen Steam boat for a river cruise along the Mississippi to New Orleans. The American Queen was both elegant and decorated in a bygone era which surpassed my expectations. Excellent daily briefings on board by local historians and the opportunity to visit a different location each day. Tour concluded in New Orleans which certainly lived up to expectations with great live music on every street corner and experiencing the sights, and sounds of Bourbon Street was the ultimate finale to the tour.

Silk Road Express - Great trip incorporating Tashkent, Khiva. Bukhara and Samarkand. Steeped in culture and history this was a great trip. The highlights for me included the unique art deco (and surprisingly efficient) metro in Tashkent  and the central square in Samarkand as nothing can prepare you for the brightness of the turquoise and gold and the array of mosaics.

What is your best memory of being a Tour Manager?

Mine would have to be: 

  • Sunset in Samarkand.
  • Being included in guest's celebrations.
  • The sights, sounds (and smells) of Bourbon Street, New Orleans.
  • Coordinating a reunion of a group who attended a River tour on the Danube whereby we meet each year.

What tips/advice would you give to someone who hasn't been on an escorted tour before?

To concentrate solely on enjoying your holiday in the knowledge that someone else will deal with any problems encountered.

To view your Tour manager as your “insurance” in the event of any issues arising be it missing luggage, sickness or whatever and be reassured that you will receive every moral, technical or physical support available - 24/7.
