Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

Arguably the most famous train in the world, the Orient Express was inaugurated by Belgian entrepreneur Georges Nagelmakers in 1883. In 1977, James Sherwood, an American businessman, purchased two of the original carriages at auction when the Orient Express was withdrawn from service. After procuring further sleeper, restaurant and Pullman carriages, Sherwood founded the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express (VSOE) and the first London to Venice run was made on 25 May 1982.

With its smart blue, white and gold livery the legendary Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is still the aristocrat amongst private trains. With carriages adorned with art-deco marquetry, vintage chrome fittings and 1930s-designed upholstery, travellers are transported to another age, one of graciousness and elegance, where one still dressed for dinner. The bar car’s resident pianist and period melodies provide the perfect ambience for sipping a cocktail whilst enjoying the passing European landscapes.

Additional Private Train Journeys Exchange the scenery of Europe for Rajasthan and a fine Indian train experience is offered on the Palace on Wheels. Though not part of VSOE, this train also recreates the ambience of another era, one once enjoyed by India’s Maharajas during journeys both within and beyond their kingdoms. The name ‘Palace on Wheels’ derives from the royal background of the coaches with the carriages decorated according to the classic Rajasthani style.

Crossing half the world, the famous Trans-Siberian railway provides an epic journey experience. Travelling in comfort by private train from Moscow, through the heart of Russia and across the expanse of Siberia into Mongolia, travellers encounter many contrasts including rural towns which are otherwise less accessible. There is certainly no more comfortable or privileged way to travel than by private train.
