The jungles, tribes, rivers, caves and orangutans of Malaysian Borneo

The equatorial island of Borneo can truly be described as a place where the traveller can find many locations of great natural beauty. This arrangement offers a spectacular opportunity to encounter flora, fauna, topography and tribes people of astonishing diversity in Sarawak and neighbouring Sabah - the two states of Malaysian Borneo.

One-time outpost of the White Rajahs - the erstwhile rulers - Sarawak is closest to mainland Malaysia. Gateway to a huge hinterland of dense tropical rainforest and mountain ranges, historical Kuching, the capital, is dotted with temples, museums and regal colonial architecture, a legacy of a bygone era. It is also known for its Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre where you can see these unique animals in the surrounding forest reserve, having been rescued from captivity. There is no guarantee of seeing the semi-wild orangutan, however they usually return from the surrounding forest at feeding times.

Northern Sarawak is home to the Mulu Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest cave complex in the world, with cave networks, rock pinnacles, cliffs and gorges. Known as 'The Land Below the Wind' and with a narrow coastal plain, Sabah is home to the world's oldest jungles, sandy beaches, Mount Kinabalu, one of South East Asia's highest peaks and Kota Kinabalu, the pleasant and relaxed state capital.
