GRAND TOUR OF JORDAN

A full and rewarding itinerary encompassing history and hospitality, souks and citadels, desert dunes in sunset hues, the salt-dense Dead Sea and the pink rock walls of Petra

“Match me such a marvel, save in Eastern clime; a rose-red city, half as old as Time.” John William Burgon famously described Petra, founded 2,000 years ago by the Nabataeans and re-discovered by Burckhardt over 200 years ago. Our ‘Perspectives of Petra’ maximises your enjoyment of this astonishing site.

Jordan is a journey through religious and ancient history: from Mount Nebo, burial site of Moses, from where he viewed the ‘Promised Land’ to Bethany, baptism site of Jesus on the river Jordan; from Madaba’s mosaic map of ancient Palestine to Jerash, best preserved Roman city of the Decapolis and known as ‘Pompeii of the East’; from the evocative Desert Castles of the Umayyad caliphs, used as a refuge by T.E. Lawrence to the Crusader castle of Kerak on the King’s Highway. Jordan’s natural beauty is all around, best displayed on the Dead Sea, under the Red Sea, in the green north and at dramatic Wadi Rum, used for the filming of ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ and most recently ‘Aladdin’.

Jordan’s coastal city of Aqaba reliable sunshine and cooling sea breezes are all it needs to make a leisurely tour-break. Along with a 16th century fort, a 4th century Roman church and an intriguing Heritage Museum, Jordan’s only port real draw is the Red Sea. Snorkelling, scuba diving and glass-bottom boating are joined by sandy beaches, seafront cafés and fabulous fish restaurants.

This year-round destination is excellent for those looking to travel in all seasons. In high season (Jun-Aug), explore without having to worry about excessively hot temperatures, while those looking to book their trip in winter (Dec-Feb) can enjoy the warm weather at the Jordan Valley and Red Sea.
