Maharaja’s Residence

Dine in the Rajput Room of the Rambagh Palace, the former residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur, now a hotel and enjoy a cocktail in the famous Polo Bar. 

Day 1 Fly overnight direct from London Heathrow to Delhi.

Day 2 Two nights at the heritage Maidens Hotel. Afternoon tour of Delhi visiting Jama Mosque, Raj Ghat, Gandhi Smriti and drive past the Red Fort.

Day 3 Visit the UNESCO sites of Humayun’s Tomb and Qutab Minar, India Gate and drive past parliament and the Viceroy’s House. (B)

Day 4 Gatimaan Express train to Agra. Visit Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal. A short drive to Dholpur for overnight at Raj Niwas Palace, a heritage property. Welcome drink in the palace wing, followed by dinner. (B, D)

Day 5 Visit the National Chambal Sanctuary, home to rich birdlife and gharial crocodiles for a boat safari on the Chambal River. Travel to Ranthambore National Park (5 hrs) for two nights at the 4-star Dev Vilas. (B, D)

Day 6 Morning & afternoon jeep game drives looking for tigers and other wildlife. (B, L, D)

Day 7 Drive to Jaipur (4 hrs) for two nights at Jai Mahal Palace, a former palace and heritage hotel of the Taj Group. Visit the City Palace and Jantar Mantar Observatory. (B)

Day 8 Optional morning balloon ride in the Jaipur area (£170, pre-bookable). Visit Amber Fort and view the ‘Palace of the Winds’. Cocktail and dinner at Rambagh Palace. (B, D)

Day 9 Visit Birla Temple and Albert Hall Museum. A short drive to to Samode for overnight in permanent luxury tents at the heritage Samode Bagh hotel, the garden retreat of the Samode Royal Family (featured in Monty Don’s Paradise Gardens). (B, D)

Day 10 Travel to Bikaner (5 hrs) via a camel farm. Overnight at Gajner Palace, a heritage hotel & former hunting lodge on a lake. (B, D)

Day 11 Visit Junagarh Fort. Drive to Jaisalmer (6 hrs). Two nights at the Rawalkot Hotel or 5-star Marriott Hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 12 Visit the fort, havelis and houses. Sunset at the Dunes (camel cart ride). (B)

Day 13 Drive to Jodhpur (6 hrs) to visit the Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada and Umaid Bhawan museum and palace. Continue to Rohet for two nights at Rohet Garh, an elegant heritage hotel near Jodhpur. (B, D)

Day 14 Bishnoi village safari by jeep. Village walk and school visit. Afternoon free. (B, D)

Day 15 Drive to Udaipur (5 hrs). Two nights at the 4-star Trident Hotel or upgrade to the world-famous Taj Lake Palace hotel. Dinner at Ambrai restaurant with lake views. (B, D)

Day 16 Tour of Udaipur by boat including Jagmandir and City Palace. Perhaps dine at the adjacent Oberoi with fine lake views. (B)

Day 17 Fly to Mumbai for overnight at the 5-star landmark hotel Taj Mahal Palace. Visit the Dabbawalla lunch carriers, Marine Drive, Gateway of India, Victoria Terminus, Dhobi Ghat and the Prince of Wales Museum. (B)

Day 1 Fly overnight from your chosen airport to Mumbai.

Day 2 Overnight at the 5-star Taj Mahal Palace, as featured in the BBC 2 series ‘Hotel India’ focused on life at India’s oldest and most famous hotel (Heritage Wing). Heritage tour of Hotel Taj Mahal Palace.

Day 3 Visit the Prince of Wales Museum and Kala Ghoda area. Tour of Mumbai including Marine drive, Gateway of India, Victoria Terminus station and Dhobi Ghat. Fly to Udaipur for two nights at the heritage Fateh Prakash Palace on the lakeside next to City palace and owned by the Royal family. (B)

Day 4 Tour of Udaipur covering the old town, City Palace, Museum and Jagmandir Island. Dine overlooking the lake. (B, D)

Day 5 Travel through the Aravali hills to Ranakpur to visit amazing Jain temple complex. Continue to Rohet (3 hrs) for two nights at Rohet Garh, a charming heritage hotel with lovely gardens. (B, D)

Day 6 Bishnoi village safari, a small village walk and a school visit. Afternoon free. (B, D)

Day 7 At Jodhpur to explore Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada and Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum. Continue to Khimsar for overnight at the heritage Khimsar Fort. Sunset at Khimsar Dunes Village. (B, D)

Day 8 Drive to Bikaner in the Thar desert. City tour by Tuk Tuk. Overnight in a historic suite at Gajner Palace Hotel, which once hosted the Viceroy and Prince of Wales. Dine in the historic restaurant. (B, D)

Day 9 Visit Junagarh fort and a camel breeding farm. Jeep to Raisar desert camp for a gala dinner with classical dance. (B, D)

Day 10 Travel to Jaipur (6 hrs). Three nights at Jai Mahal Palace, a heritage 5-star Hotel of the Taj group with Mughal gardens. Evening cooking demo with a local family. (B, D)

Day 11 Visit City Palace and Jantar Mantar Observatory. Optional Sound & Light at Amber Fort (£17, bookable locally). (B)

Day 16 Drive to Agra and visit the Taj Mahal. Travel by train to Delhi for two nights at the 5-star Taj Mahal Hotel. (B)
